Jesus and the disciples, traveled the dusty road. On their walk to Jerusalem.
About one mile from their destination, they came to the little village of Bethphage. Known as the house of unripe figs.
Within the limit of a Sabbath-day’s journey from Jerusalem. Near Bethany and the tomb of Lazarus. Situated on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives.
Jesus stopped and told two of the disciples, “Go to the village over there, and when you enter, you’ll see a donkey tied with its colt. Loose them and bring them to me. And if anyone asks what you’re doing, just say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and they will immediately let you take them.”
After finding the donkey and the colt as Jesus said, the disciples took them to Jesus and then threw their garments over the colt for Him to sit upon.
And so the journey to Jerusalem began.
The journey to what would be the worst event of their lives. The worst event in history. Yet, ushering in the fulfillment of prophecy for the One with whom they traveled…
“Look, your King is coming to you.
He is humble, riding on a donkey—
riding on a donkey’s colt.”*
This King, the King with a crown yet-to-come, one fashioned of thorns…He’s coming. On His way to Jerusalem.
This King, riding upon a lowly, unblemished servant…He’s coming to you.
And so they entered Jerusalem to the clangor of enthusiasm. The excitement of the bulging crowd, those who recognized this King, grew.
So stirred by His presence, many spread their garments on the road before Him. Others cut down palm branches and spread them on the road.
And accompanying this? The praise of the Son of God.
This King, coming to save the world, arrived in joyous splendor, with palms waving, and shouts of Hosanna. The multitude’s passion heightened as they shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”**
But those in the city, who knew not this Man, wondered, “Who is this?”
“It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee,” they were told.***
“Look! He’s your King! He’s coming to you. He’s coming just for you. He’s riding that lone mile to begin His sacrifice for the sins of the world.”
And He comes to you as well. He comes, offering you the cross-sacrifice He died to give you…free!
Will you need to ask, “Who is this?”
He’s your King. Look, He’s coming to you.
And He will come again for you.
This One will return again, mounted upon a white steed, carrying a bow and wearing a crown on His head, going out conquering and to conquer.****
And when He returns, how many will He find who have faith in Him?
How many will be praising His return? How many will welcome Him with shouts of Hosanna?
Blessings of anticipation… Lynn
