Follow me on a little excursion and see if you’re off track betting…
I walked along this path for awhile and, now, I stood still. The path branched out into two trails before me.
Trellised honeysuckle arched a small, closed gate to the path on the right, which appeared narrow and straight, as far as I could see. Written on a sign on the gate was the path’s name: The Straight and Narrow Way.
The trail on the left offered a beaten path, yet with lovely, enticing beauty. A broad gate opened to a short passageway before the trail rounded a bend. The sign on the gate read: The Enchanted Way.
I stood, bewildered. A divided choice. Each beckoned with its own appeal.
As I pondered my dilemma, I saw a luminous figure appear by the left gate, beckoning me with his beguiling voice.
“Walk this way,” he tempted, as he bowed and coaxed me to enter.
“It offers you everything you could ever want. It’ll fulfill your every desire. If you are thirsty, it offers drinks of untold quenching. If hungry, it offers tasty morsels of delight that will tantalize. If searching for love or power or success, the pleasures here will indulge your every longing.”
Then, I turned to see another resplendent figure, a man with open arms, standing at the gate to the Straight and Narrow Way. I heard his gentle, soothing whisper, “Come and walk with Me.”
“Pray tell. Who are you, Sir?” I asked.
“I am your Guide. I’m here to lead you into making the right choices. The Narrow Way is the best way.”
Curious about this one who drew me with love in his eyes, I asked, “What does this pathway offer?”
“Though this Way may have its bumps and potholes, it offers a chance for a new life. Only I can open the gate. And I offer a constant, pure relationship. A shoulder to lean upon when you’re tired or your heart aches. Comfort for your pain and encouragement for your disillusionment. Answers to your petitions and a lifetime of forgiveness.
“I offer Living Water for your soul’s thirst and Living Bread for your heart’s hunger. I will lift your burdens when you let them go. And when you become weak, I will carry you.
“I offer an eternity of joyful living with Me and a Love so true and strong that nothing else will satisfy.
“Your choices will lead you closer to Me or take you away from Me. When you get off track, you’re betting your wrong decisions won’t matter or have consequences.
“But those bets won’t pay off. You can only depend on My Way to be just what you need. Any other way will only bring you pain, despite its alluring invitation.
“If you do step off my path, I will woo you back. So, follow My footsteps to be safe. All this and My Word can be relied upon.
“I walk this path with you. You will never be alone.”
So, I pondered the beaten, broad path so many have taken and the narrow path less traveled…
Which path do I bet on?
Off track betting.
Yup. That’s what happens when we think we choose a path other than God’s desired one for us. When we think our wrong choices don’t break the Lord’s heart. When we think we can get away with anything against God’s Word. Then, we’re betting against God, aren’t we?
But, oh, how tenderly He yearns over His wayward ones, His sons and daughters who have disobeyed and chosen the wrong path. How He pines to save them from the heartaches of the wrong way.
The soul’s hunger and thirst can only be satisfied with the true companionship with the Lord.
Blessings of the Straight and Narrow Way…Lynn
