Today, Thursday, May 2, 2019, is the National Day of Prayer. We’re praying for our country.
But whatever day you read this, it should be a day of prayer for our country.
This year, the president of the National Day of Prayer, Dr. Ronnie Floyd, announced that the theme to observe is “Love One Another,” which is based on Jesus’ words in John 13:34, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34 NIV)
Oh, how our country needs our prayers. Dr. Floyd said, “From the church house to the state house and all the way to the White House, we need to learn to love one another.”
He has asked that we pray in four ways:
1) Ask God to bless America: to forgive us as a nation’ to bless it spiritually in a fresh, new way, returning us to the Lord; to raise up godly leaders in all areas; and to bless the nation economically.
2) Pray for all citizens to love one another, beginning with Christ’s followers, to bring unity and harmony.
3) Pray for the centers of influence: for the branches of our government to respect one another and work together; for our military and its leaders to be protected; for the media to be respectful of all; for business to have leaders of integrity; for education to create a culture of respect and love for one another; for churches to be examples of love and inspire the Love One Another movement; and for families to return to the biblical model, creating families that practice forgiveness and love.
4) Ask God for the National Day of Prayer to become a catalytic spiritual movement across the country.
Prayer: Lord, forgive us for our failure to live out Your Word and Your will so that others would know You and welcome You into their lives.
Lord, we pray in agreement today with others around the country as we pray You to raise up godly leaders to guide this country according to Your purpose. Bring the branches of our government, the military, the media, businesses, education, churches, and families together with unity, harmony, and respect for each other.
Keep evil at bay and deal out Your judgment on those who seek their own agenda which causes harm for others.
Lord, bring spiritual awareness to Your children in a fresh, new way that we may love others as You have loved us. Bring unity and harmony with Your family.
May this movement be embraced by the country and be a catalyst to bring harmony and unity to all.
We ask You to move each of us to love one another in the same way you love us: willfully, sacrificially, and unconditionally. And bless us, Your children, that we may bring glory to You and bless others with Your goodness. We ask all Your best for this country be done in Jesus’ name, amen!
If we love one another, then Paul’s words to us should reign in our lives: “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.
“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God.” (Rom. 12:10-19a NASB)
May your love bless others…Lynn
