Did the year that just flew by leave you empty? Did it leave you aching for something new, something more, something else? Maybe, it left you discouraged, overwhelmed, or lacking?
If so, I understand. I have some empty areas as well. Some that need a boost of encouragement. Need plumping up. Need refilling. Need something new.
The other day, a thought plopped into my noggin (I’m sure it was the Lord): if I am filled with self and not empty, not lacking, not needing something, how can the Lord fill my heart, my soul, my life, with what is lacking?
Every morning is a new day for me to say, “Fill me up with all I need, Lord. I leak!” (from I Have a Secret: I Leak at Night!)
If I want my cup of life to runneth over, it must first be low or empty. So, to fill up, I need to pray:
Lord, I come with my hands raised to You, not raised in fists, but with open, empty palms. And a heart that is emptied of all pride, unforgiveness, bitterness, regret, selfishness, and whatever else stands in the way of my being filled with You alone. For, as David said, “Lord, you alone are…my cup of blessing.”
Fill me with Yourself, Lord, that I may receive Your blessings. Fill me from Your well that never runs dry. That I may overflow with blessings for others. Amen!
When others come to us for comfort, peace, encouragement, or prayer, do we send them away empty, because we, too, are empty?
When you lift your hands to the Father, with what are they filled? God says to us as He did to Moses, “What is that in your hand?” (Ex. 4:2 NKJV) What does He see? Does He see fingers tightly clutching anger? A palm filled with the works of self-righteousness? A glove stuffed with hidden schemes?
If you are filled with hatred, unforgiveness, bitterness, or anything else from your trials and heartaches, how can you have room to be filled with the Lord and His praise? (from the Ten I’s of Prayer 9)
If we are not empty, with what are we filled? Meanness? Bitterness? Hatred? Judgment? Pride?
What about selfishness? If we are selfish, how then do overflow with love, joy, peace, and encouragement to others? Are we not to draw from the Lord’s well not only for all we need but also to share with and serve others who are empty? We draw from the Lord in order to be filled ourselves and that we do not fail others.
My prayer for each of you:
“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Rom. 15:13 NLT) And overflow to others with all the Lord offers!
The Lord stands at the threshold of this New Year to refill, replace, restore, replenish, and renew all your emptiness.
