Leaves! Leaves! Everywhere leaves! And oh, those clogged gutters!
Our neighborhood was once a farm, so there are bazillions of old, very tall trees. One next-door neighbor has a couple of trees that the wind loves to pick up and carry spring’s helicopter seeds and fall’s fading leaves over into our yard and our gutters.
We have large trees as well but their seeds and leaves usually do not make it to our gutters, just the backyard.
Soooo…twice a year, the gutters need to be cleaned out. If they’re not cleaned out, things start to grow in them! And the purpose and function of the gutters is obstructed. The proper rain flow is hindered.
It’s the same with us as conduits of the Lord for His Holy Spirit. We are to be channels of His abundance. We become a hindrance when we allow the debris of life to build up.
We are then useless for a time. Because we become clogged with frets, doubts, worries, pride, selfishness, impatience, unforgiveness, unbelief, and all the other things that cause unrest and stagnation…
Imagine a broken heart not receiving a comforting message because your anger with another obstructs your channel of comfort. Imagine monetary help is not delivered to a needy soul because your root-channel is filled with selfishness. Imagine a command of the Lord not being carried out because your busyness hinders your root-channel of obedience.
For a channel to be useful, it must flow with forgiveness. With thanksgiving. Praise. Faith. Trust. Patience. For God’s power to work its best, peace also needs to flow. ***
And prayer is the great cleanser, our greatest de-clogger, to wash away the litter of life and self. Being in God’s presence and asking Him to forgive us for what clogs our life as we forgive others is purging.
How can God fulfill His Word, His promises, His plan, if we live with a blocked gutter? How can He fill us with what we need? And how then can His outpouring of grace and mercy ripple through us to meet the needs of others?
There are multitudes of deserts out there, arid and unhappy souls lacking heart-satisfaction in Jesus, desolate without Him. Broken hearts filled with disappointment, needing the refreshing and eternal Living Waters of Christ.
God yearns over these desert-hearts. Is our root-channel clean of caustic channel-blockers in order for God to deliver His message to the hurting and broken through us? ***
If our true desire is to be God’s conduit of blessings to others, those gutters of debris and the things growing there need to be cleansed of the channel-blockers.
May our prayer be to live a pure life so that the flow of the Spirit cannot fail to pass through the channel of our lives and into the lives of others.
“My dear people…we should make ourselves clean.
We should clean out everything that makes
our lives or our spirits dirty.
We should try to be altogether holy
because we respect God with fear.”
