Unbeaten: Bible Verses for When You’re Hurting

April 20, 2016 By Lynn H Mosher

Lindsey Bell Bible Verses for When You're Hurting

We all hurt at one time or another. And sometimes, it seems too often. When our heart aches, when it is wounded and bleeding, we need the comfort of the Lord and His Word.

My special guest today is Lindsey Bell, who is celebrating the launch of her new Bible study and devotional book Unbeaten: How Biblical Heroes Rose Above Their Pain…and You Can Too.

To celebrate her book, Lindsey is giving away a HUGE bundle of books! Leave a comment on this post to be entered to win. You can get more entries by commenting on other blogs in the tour as well. Get a full list of participating blogs on Lindsey’s site.

About Lindsey:

Lindsey Bell is the author of the Bible study and devotional, Unbeaten, and of the parenting devotional, Searching for Sanity. She’s a stay-at-home mother of two silly boys, a minister’s wife, an avid reader, and a lover of all things chocolate. Lindsey writes weekly on her site about faith, family, and learning to love the life she’s been given.

Lindsey Bell Unbeaten CoverAbout Unbeaten:

Why does life have to be so hard? If you’ve ever asked this question, you’re not alone. Difficult times often leave Christians searching the Bible for answers to some of life’s most difficult questions.

Questions like:

* Does God hear me when I pray?
* Why isn’t He doing anything?
* Does He even care?

In Unbeaten, Lindsey walks with readers through the stories of men and women in the Bible who went through difficult situations. In this 10-week Bible study and devotional, she addresses many of these questions and helps readers learn how they, too, can be unbeaten.

If you’re hurting today, I pray these verses minister to you. Here’s Lindsey…

The Bible is far from silent when it comes to pain and suffering.

In light of the release of Unbeaten, my new Bible study and devotional that’s written specifically for those going through hard times, I thought it would be appropriate to share some of my favorite Bible verses for when you’re hurting.

Bible Verses for When You’re Hurting:

1. Psalm 34:17-18:

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

2. Psalm 9:10:

Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.

3. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9:

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

4. James 1:12:

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

5. Romans 8:28:

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

6. John 16:33:

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

7. Joshua 1:9:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

8. Romans 8:35-39:

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

9. Romans 5:3-4:

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

10. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18:

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

What other Bible verses encourage you when you’re hurting?

*All Scriptures are from the NIV.

“We are pressed on every side by troubles, but not crushed and broken. We are perplexed because we don’t know why things happen as they do, but we don’t give up and quit. We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going.” (2 Cor. 4:8-9 TLB)

How to End the Year Well

December 10, 2014 By Lynn H Mosher

Lindsey Bell giveawayMy guest today is Lindsey Bell. I’m happy to be a part of her December book blog tour for her new book, Searching for Sanity: 52 Insights from the Parents of the Bible. Lindsey is a stay-at-home mother of two, minister’s wife, avid reader, and chocolate lover.

Be sure to sign up for Lindsey’s giveaway at the end for a chance to win the giveaway in the image.

About Searching for Sanity:
Have you ever looked at your beloved children and wondered, what in the world am I doing? Why did God trust me—of all people—to raise them?

Motherhood is the most difficult job many of us will ever take. Searching for Sanity offers moms an opportunity to take a breath, dig into the Word, and learn from parents of the past. In short devotions designed for busy moms, this book uses the parents of the Bible—both the good and the bad—to inspire today’s mothers.

You can pick up a copy today at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Now, here’s Lindsey…

It’s December, the last month of the year.

In just a few weeks, many of us will create New Year’s Resolutions or choose One Word as a theme word for our year.

Before we do those things, though, I want to share a few ways we can end December well.

How to End the Year Well:-

1. Grieve the past.

A few years ago, my husband and I went through an incredibly difficult time. We lost four babies within two years.

At the beginning of the year following these losses, I was determined to move forward. I didn’t want to be stuck in the pain of the past, so I buried the feelings I had and hoped eventually they’d go away.

What God finally taught me is that broken things don’t get fixed on their own. We can’t move past our grief until we work through it.

I don’t know what you’ve gone through this past year, but I do know this. Moving forward after a hard situation can often only happen once you have grieved what’s been lost.

2. Choose thankfulness.

I used to think you had to feel thankful to give thanks.

You don’t.

Jesus gave thanks shortly before he died on the cross. He knew he was facing death and betrayal and abandonment, and yet he still gave thanks.

That tells me we don’t have to feel bubbly and happy to give thanks.

Thanksgiving is a choice…a choice to find the good within the bad. A choice to believe God can use even the most painful of circumstances to bring about something good. And a choice to look for your blessings instead of fixating on your pain.

3. Prepare for a New Year.

What do you want the New Year to look like? Begin planning for it now.

Do you want to spend more time in the Word? Choose a devotional today so you’ll be ready on January 1st. (Side note: if you’re a parent looking for a quick devotional, I’d love for you to check out my book at the end of this post).

Do you want to laugh more? Start thinking today about the changes you need to make in your life so this can happen.

Having a great 2015 begins with ending 2014 well. I’d love to hear from you. What other tips would you add to this list?

To enter to win Lindsey’s MEGA-GIVEAWAY (the winner will receive 6 books!), leave a comment on any of Lindsey’s guest posts this month (including this one).

With Faith Like Hers: I am Ruth book tour

September 3, 2014 By Lynn H Mosher

Carol Peterson Ruth***Today, I welcome my friend Carol Peterson to tell us about her new Bible study, I am Ruth from her Bible study series With Faith Like Hers. Don’t miss the party info and the giveaway chances at the end. So, here’s Carol…

My middle name is Ruth. When I tell people that, they almost always say, “Oh! I love the book of Ruth in the Bible. It’s such a beautiful story.” Okay. I get it, but having heard that comment all my life, whenever I turned to those four short chapters, I’d usually yawn and think…whatever.

Then, God led me to write a series of Bible studies for women called With Faith Like Hers. Each book focuses on a woman in Scripture and how her character and circumstances are like ours today.

When God “suggested” (isn’t He such a gentleman?) I write this study series, I knew, of course, I would include Ruth. I wasn’t enthusiastic about it but was silently pleased with myself for not arguing with God this time.

I sat down in obedience and began writing I am Ruth and the lessons we gals could learn, and, suddenly, I stopped yawning and started shaking my head in amazement at the strength and courage of Ruth. She was one amazing gal.

I opened my awareness to the Spirit’s leading and let Him teach me wonders I never expected to find. I discovered a life recorded in Scripture doesn’t have to be filled with battles or sins or mistakes rectified to be an important example for us today. All that is required is our open hearts to learn whatever God has in mind for us to learn.

Scholars believe the book of Ruth to be a foreshadowing of Jesus’ salvation. But it is also the story of courage as Ruth left her homeland to settle in a land of strangers, who despised her as a gentile and a pagan and whose customs and religion were different from hers.

Ruth is the story of a woman armed with new faith, humbling and exhausting herself to physically labor to provide for herself and her mother-in-law Naomi. It tells of a woman who was pleasant, trusting, and companionable through it all. And that can be the way God sees us modern gals, too, when we apply Ruth’s lessons to our lives.

Those lives were recorded for us for a reason. We might as well learn from them.

What about you?
Do you love the book of Ruth or have you always thought it boring and inconsequential?

Joy and Light book tour

November 6, 2013 By Lynn H Mosher

Connie Arnold Love and Light

***I deeply apologize to Connie and everyone. I mistakenly listed the wrong title. It should have been Love and Light.

Today, I bring you a sweet friend and her new book, Peaceful Moments of Love and Light. I know you’ll enjoy reading what she has to say. Your comments will be added to those of other blogs on this book tour and selected names will receive prizes. (See end of post)

Joy is based on the knowledge,
though the world appears dark and dim,
that the light of God’s love is shining;
soak it in and be blessed by Him.

“Dark and dim” – do you think that’s a good description of how the world appears to you often? It certainly does to me at times, especially when I watch the news and hear about all the sad and terrible things happening in different parts of the world and in our own country.

Depression can settle over you like a heavy blanket of fog, blocking out all the light and joy of life. It’s easy to get caught up in misery and self-pity when things aren’t going well or all you see around you are chaos and uncertainty.

As long as your focus is on the bad things around you in this world, darkness is likely to remain. But when your focus is directed upward and your heart opens to receive God’s love, light will start flooding your being with a sweet peace as you soak in that loving light and become aware of God’s abundant blessings in your life.

May you always live in God’s love and light,
may hope fill you through the darkest night,
may joy and contentment shine on your face
and may you be blessed by God’s mercy and grace.

(Excerpt of Peaceful Moments of Love and Light
52-Week Daily Devotional

This post is part of a blog tour for Connie’s new devotional, Peaceful Moments of Love and Light, available from RPJ and Company in both soft and hard cover, and her new children’s book, Count 1,2,3 With Me, from 4RV Publishing. Signed copies of each of her books are available on her website . Books are also available at a discounted price from Amazon.

Three prizes will be awarded at the end of the tour. Winners will be selected from those who comment here and at the other blogs participating. See the prizes and additional details on Connie’s blog.

Does God Give Us More Than We Can Handle?

October 10, 2013 By Lynn H Mosher

Soldier's Heart*Today, I bring you the debut book for Tamera Lynn Kraft. If you love historical fiction with romance thrown in, you will want to check this out. Also, be sure to leave a comment about something you have gone through to be eligible for the book giveaway.

I’ve heard the saying many times: God never gives us more than we can handle. But that’s only partially true. Here’s the verse it comes from…

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (1 Cor. 10:13 NKJV)

It says in the verse that God won’t give you a temptation you can’t handle. But trials and difficulties are another matter. He promises we will have difficulties and lots of them. Some of them will be harder than we can handle on our own.

Before I knew this, I used to get mad at God. I didn’t understand why He allowed things to come into my life that were beyond me. Then, I learned this simple truth: There are reasons God gives us more than we can handle.

If He didn’t give us more than we can handle, we wouldn’t know how much we need Him. We wouldn’t be on our knees crying out to the only One who can help us through our difficulties. Jesus Christ is the only One who can speak to the wind and waves in our lives and command them to be still. That’s good news because I get in trouble when I think I can manage without Him.

The other reason is to grow our faith and perseverance. The book of James tells us that trials are a good thing. They strengthen us spiritually. When an athlete trains, he works at stretching his limits so he can get stronger. He puts a little more on himself than he can easily handle.

It’s the same spiritually.

God allows us to stretch ourselves spiritually by putting more on us than we can easily handle so that our faith can grow. When I look over my life, I find there are things I can manage easily now that would have thrown me years ago.

In my novella, Soldier’s Heart, my main character went through things during the Civil War that he couldn’t handle. He came home to his young wife with PTSD (Soldier’s Heart). When he learned to turn to God, it helped him deal with the horrors of war.

So, God will put more on us than we can handle. And that’s good news. I’m giving away a copy of Soldier’s Heart to someone who leaves a comment on something they went through with God’s help.

Here’s the description of Soldier’s Heart…

Noah Andrews, a soldier with the Ohio Seventh Regiment can’t wait to get home now that his three year enlistment is coming to an end. He plans to start a new life with his young wife. Molly was only sixteen when she married her hero husband. She prayed every day for him to return home safe and take over the burden of running a farm.

But the war can’t keep from following Noah home. Can they build a life together when his soldier’s heart comes between them?

Soldier’s Heart is available in e-book from Amazon Kindle
Kobo Reader
Barnes & Noble Nook
It will also be available in paperback in a couple of months.

Searching for Sara ~ book tour

December 3, 2012 By Lynn H Mosher

Today, I’m happy to be a part of a book tour for my e-friend Nona King. Nona’s new book is entitled Searching for Sara and is the story of two people who face their daily tortures of fear and grief to find happiness and renewed faith.

Nona says, “In writing Searching for Sara, I discovered so many different things about myself and my own struggle with fear. Sara became my hero, my inspiration to become more than I was. An encouragement to continue walking forward in determination, comforted by faith. Sara taught me a deeper truth about love, compassion, and forgiveness.

“I love her, Sara Little, and her story of romance, which focuses on walking in obedience and faith. This story shows us how friendship and facing our fears can lead us through grief to love. Searching for Sara is one of my favorite novels, and I hope she will be yours, too.”

In the book…

Sara Little has ached to live in America. But being born of a single mother in London’s working class, she could only dream. Then, scrawled in hasty intensity, Sara receives an invitation to America. Drawn to the possibility of a new beginning, she follows God’s whisper and steps forward into the unknown. But more awaits than the realization of her dreams.

Sara’s benefactor is handsome widower Christopher Lake, a philanthropist dedicated to helping the less fortunate redefine their future. Though devastated by the loss of his wife, he dedicates himself to her last request: To provide Sara the means for a brighter future.

Sara’s gift of art inspires Christopher’s sponsorship, and he is determined to protect her gentle heart while propelling her into artistic society. Even if he must press her forward beyond her shy nature.

But when a local paper weaves tales of a romantic entanglement, Sara is stricken by the stark reality of a growing devotion. Caught in the whirlwind of debuts and dinner parties with prospective patrons, she has fallen in love with the one man she believes she does not deserve.

Could a servant girl hope to bless such a noble man to happiness?
