The New Year is opening up before us.
New adventures. New experiences. New paths to tread.
And new bumps in the road to throw us out of whack.
Ever have your car get out of alignment? One main way is for your tires to wear out unevenly. Maybe your car drifts to one side but you think you’re driving straight. Or maybe your steering wheel vibrates.
The wheel alignment can be thrown out of whack by hitting the curb or pot holes or bumping into something.
It doesn’t take but a fraction of an inch to be out of alignment. “Over time, a slight misalignment can cause a lot of uneven or premature tire wear.”
What threw you out of alignment last year?
These things wear us down…unevenly. Cause us to drift to one side. Hit more potholes and bump into things. And prematurely wear us out.
Will the same things you allowed yourself to stumble on last year throw you out of alignment in this New Year?
It’s not the great falls that trip us up but the little stumbles the enemy tries to use to throw us out of alignment.
Each day of the coming year will be filled with new choices. What will we place first in each one…
* time with the Lord?
* the Word?
* obedience to the Word?
* forgiveness of others?
* purity. holiness, godliness?
* the Lord’s guidance and wisdom?
Seek the first things first, as Matthew tells us, “But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.” (Matt. 6:33 AMPC) I like the way the New Living Translation states it, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matt. 6:33 NLT)
Seek the Lord and His Word as for treasure. David said, “I rejoice in your word like one who discovers a great treasure.” (Ps. 119:162 NLT)
To put the right things first and stay in alignment with the Lord, take an inventory of yourself on a regular basis. Ask Him if you are putting Him first…or something else.
Ask Him to help you keep HIM as the first thing in all you do, to keep you in alignment with Him and His Word.
May your New Year be filled with all that you need to keep you in alignment.
