I keep reading about and hearing people say, “God doesn’t need us.” “God doesn’t need me.” And “God doesn’t need man. Man needs God.” Well, of course, we need Him! That’s a blown-out understatement!
But I agree. God is God; He doesn’t need anything.
Luke said this about God in Acts 17:24-25, “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since He is Lord of heaven and earth, He doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve His needs—for He has no needs. He Himself gives life and breath to everything, and He satisfies every need.” (NLT)
Everything is God’s; He has no need. Psalm 50:10-12 tells us, “For every beast of the forest is Mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the mountains, and the wild beasts of the field are Mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you; for the world is Mine, and all its fullness.” (NKJV)
However, I still wonder…
*…if He doesn’t need me, why does He ask me to do certain things?
God doesn’t need my works. But my neighbor might, a stranger might, a family member might. So while He doesn’t need it, He needs for me to do it! Yes, He can succeed whether I am obedient to His plans or not. He can always get someone else if I choose to disobey.
So, I wonder…
*…how would others be reached with the good news of the gospel if God didn’t need me (or you) to spread the Word?
*…how would others’ lives be changed if they did not see me (or you) living for the Lord?
But why is my service necessary? Okay, let’s ask Billy Graham and Mother Teresa. Why is and was their service necessary? Because of all those who have received Christ as their Lord and Savior or been shown the love of God through kindnesses to them.
So, I wonder…
*…how would others see the Lord’s love in action if I (or you) don’t supply them with the things they need or give to those who provide for them?
God doesn’t need my money. But what of all those around the world who need to be fed, clothed, given clean water to drink, have schools, homes, and churches built for them? None of this just pops into being.
I continue to wonder…
*…will God come down Himself and do these things if I (or you) don’t? Didn’t He do that already? And now, doesn’t He expect me (and you) to do these things?
I guess I am naïve in thinking that: how will God’s will be accomplished if there is no one to do it? Well, yes, God is God and He can do miracles. However, He doesn’t normally work that way.
He doesn’t need us as though He lacked something. But He needs us to be His workers in the field for Him, as Paul said, “He has given us the work of making peace between Himself and others…For we are God’s fellow workers.” (2 Cor. 5:18b CEV, 1 Cor. 3:9a NIV)
Doesn’t this troubled world need the Lord? Don’t broken hearts need the Lord? Doesn’t God call us to be of service to others? Isn’t this His will and purpose for our lives? Why would He call us if He didn’t need us?
