What Causes Bad Eyes?

June 4, 2015 By Lynn H Mosher

What Causes Bad Eyes

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good,
your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad,
your whole body will be full of darkness.”
Matt. 6:22-23 NIV

Have you ever played the children’s game I Spy with My Little Eye? Then, you know how to play. You glance around to find an object to participate in the game.

What do our little eyes spy that makes an impression on the film of our soul, heart, mind, and spirit?

What we look at, what we focus on, becomes imprinted as snapshots within us.

Unfortunately, in real life, we sometimes play the game but allow our eyes to spy on things we shouldn’t. We end up with naughty eyes.

We view things on the television, in movies, magazines, or on internet sites. Or our little eyes wander into other harmful things like pride or greed. Or maybe our eyes turn green with envy.

Solomon spied everything and denied himself nothing, not homes, herds, gardens, slaves, and especially not women, and said so, “Whatever my eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any pleasure.” (Eccl. 2:10 Amp)

David spied on Bathsheba and we all know the consequences that followed.

Looking too often at the wrong things, our eyes become bad, as diseased with impurities, which over time increase, blinding our view of the Lord.

We should do as blind Bartimaeus did when Jesus commanded that he to be called to Him. Upon hearing that Jesus called him, “Bartimaeus yanked off his old coat and flung it aside, jumped up and came to Jesus.” (Mark 10:50 TLB) By faith, he threw off his garment of dirt and darkness and exchanged it for a garment of purity and light!

Though God fills us with His holiness through Christ’s salvation, the upkeep of holiness depends solely upon us. It is absolutely necessary, as Paul persuades, that we “Pursue…a godly life,” (1 Tim. 6:11a NLT) for “God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.” (1 Thess. 4:7 NKJV)…The purity of holiness is not an option, for without it, we will not see the Lord, as the writer of Hebrews tells us, “Seek to live a clean and holy life, for one who is not holy will not see the Lord.” (Heb. 12:14 TLB)

By what are you blinded? What causes your eyes to wander around and go bad, to be diseased? The etymology for the word disease is this: dis- means a negative or reverse force; apart, without, a different direction. Ease means freedom from labor, pain, or physical annoyance; tranquil rest, comfort; freedom from concern, anxiety, or solicitude; a quiet state of mind.

Dis-ease is then a lack of ease, a lack of comfort, pleasure, or well-being. Therefore, do as Bartimaeus did: cast off your garb of dirt and darkness. “Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Rom. 13:14a NLT) Your garment of purity and Light!

So, “Be encouraged! Get up! He’s calling you.” (Mark 10:49b CEB) The Lord is calling you, and me, to a life of purity and Light!

My prayer, and I hope yours as well…

Lord, “Turn my eyes from worthless things,
and give me life through Your word.” Amen!
Ps. 119:37 NLT

And We Know…

May 16, 2012 By Lynn H Mosher

“And we know that all things work together for good
to those who love God, to those who are the called
according to His purpose.” (Rom. 8:28 NKJV)
I’m at it again! Dissecting Scripture and digging into the meanings of the words.
If you read my post on Hebrews 11:1, Now Faith Is…, there is a word used there that is used in the verse above also. In the Hebrews passage, it is translated now, and in the Romans passage, it is translated and.
If you didn’t read that post, I’ll reiterate (you can click here to read it). The Greek word for nowand and is a conjunction or connecting word between two thoughts. It also means but, moreover, moreover also, also, and also, or but rather. It would be more appropriate to say, “Moreover we know…” or “Also we know…”
The Greek word used in this verse for know actually means to see, the implied meaning is to know. It also means to perceive, notice, discern, discover, pay attention, observe, inspect, examine, look at or behold, experience, and suggests a full knowing.
The Greek word for working with is sunergeo, which, in part, means to labor together as partners, co-operate, co-worker or fellow-worker, help (work) with, work, or to put forth power together with and thereby to assist.
It comes from the word sunergos, which is the basis for our English word synergy. It means a combined action of two or more agents, when combined, have a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual effects. Or as one definition for synergy says: to be more successful or productive as a result of a merger.
The first definition of synergismlisted in The Random House Dictionary of the English Language, published in 1966, says “the doctrine that the human will cooperates with the Holy Ghost in the work of regeneration.” Thank you, Random House! There’s the total effect of a merger!
Good means excelling in any respect, distinguished, useful, to advantage, suited to something, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy, benefit, etc.
Called means invited, appointed, a saint, saints by calling, or an appointment to apostleship.
The Greek word for purposeis interesting. It means a proposal as an intention, setting forth of a thing, placing of it in view as show-bread is exposed before God.
Don’t you know love those definitions?
Before we put it all together, what is before this verse? What is it moreover or also? Romans 8:27 starts out with that moreover/also/now/and word again, “Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” (NKJV)
Now, what would Lynn’s Version say? More than knowing that the Spirit intercedes for the saints, pleading on our behalf…also we fully know that all things are synergistic, being more successful as the result of merging with the Holy Spirit, and working together for good, for benefit, for advantage, for those who love God, for those who are invited to be saints according to His intentions set before Him.
If we are in sin or worry and fret about a situation, we impede the Lord’s hand to work for good, because we are not working in accordance with His purpose. But when we take our attitudes and our hands off, leaving it in His hands, it all works together for our good and for our benefit.
God takes all our negative circumstances, our stormy trials, our griefs and heartaches, our failings, our weaknesses, our needs, and mixes them in with His love, guidance, comfort, peace, supply, and power, stirring them all together, molding them, and turns them around to display His creation of good.
Then, we can say with the psalmist, “This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous to see!” (Ps. 118:23 TLB)
…and we fully know!

Do You Know Your Calling?

July 22, 2010 By Lynn H Mosher

Do you know you have a call on your life? Maybe you probably already know that. Or maybe you don’t know that. Or maybe you’ve been sensing that the Lord is calling you to something but you don’t know what it is. Or maybe you are searching for that calling.

Whether you are searching or not, you are called. As Christians, we are all called.

Paul says that God “called you to become His child” (1 Thess. 5:24TLB) and that “You also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ” (Rom. 1:6 NIV), “called into the fellowship of (God’s) Son, Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Cor. 1:9 NKJV).

So, what does the Word say about being called? We are…

* to “be all the more eager to make (our) calling and election sure.” (2 Peter 1:10 NIV)

* urged “to live a life worthy of the calling (we) have received.” (Eph. 4:1 NIV)

* “called to liberty.” (Gal. 5:13 NKJV)

* to be holy, “as the One Who called (us) is holy.” (1 Peter 1:16 Amp)

* to be “flooded with light so that (we) can see something of the future He has called (us) to share.” (Eph. 1:18 TLB)

* to be “of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that (we) were called to this, that (we) may inherit a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:8-9 NKJV)

Not the specific kind of calling you were looking for? Well, if we cannot step into the callings listed for us in the Word, how can we seek our life’s specific calling that the Lord desires for us to share with others?

God does have a distinct plan and purpose for our lives, a calling that only each of us can fulfill. So, how do you find out what it is? Think about what fuels the passion of your soul and what sparks the fire in your heart. What do you love to do that you would do even if no one thanked you?

God has called each of us to do certain things, to be His hands of help, comfort, or assistance to others in one capacity or another. If we are called according to His purpose, we share that calling with others. But if we do not do for others what God has called us to do, we hinder the fulfillment of His purpose. How are we then profitable to the Kingdom if we refuse to function in our calling?

Whatever your call may be, “the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” (Rom. 11:29 NKJV) They are without change of purpose and bring no regrets.

Each calling is a ministry to others. The Lord called me late in my life to write for Him, something I would never have guessed. It is now my passion and I wholeheartedly and humbly obey His call.

In your seeking, you may find a surprise calling on your life, at any time of your life. It may merely be to witness to your next door neighbor or serve the homeless at a local shelter. God’s list is endless.

Rest in the knowledge that the Lord will tell you at just the right time, so that “you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.” (Eph. 1:18b NKJV)

Whatever God calls you to do, “work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” (Col. 3:23 NIV)

May you be blessed as you obey God’s calling on your life and may others know the benefit of your obedience.
